Whitmer appoints judge to Michigan probate court

Dr. Amber Libby, a former assistant public defender, takes seat on 6th District court

Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Dr. Amber Libby to the 6th District Probate Court, which serves Mackinac and Luce Counties.

Libby, of Saint Ignace, previously served as a senior assistant public defender for Marquette County. She also worked as managed assigned counsel for indigent defense in Cheboygan County and as chief assistant prosecuting attorney in Cheboygan County. She is a member of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan - Tip of the Mitt Region.

Libby holds a Bachelor of Science in political science from Northern Michigan University, a Master of Public Administration from Central Michigan University, a Juris Doctor and Master of Laws from Western Michigan University's Thomas M. Cooley Law School, and a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in criminal justice and justice administration from Walden University.

The appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Judge W. Clayton Graham. Libby's term will begin on October 12, 2026, and expire on January 1, 2029.
