Governor Gavin Newsom signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Spain at Climate Week NYC during the UN General Assembly. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Deputy Prime Minister Sara Aagesen also signed the agreement, which expands cooperation on clean energy, electrification, battery storage, carbon markets, methane reduction, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

During the conference, Newsom participated in a fireside conversation with European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra, discussing deepened collaboration between California and the European Union on clean energy deployment, energy security, economic competitiveness, climate resilience, and carbon markets.

The governor highlighted California's experience managing climate impacts, including droughts and wildfires. The state experienced two worst-in-a-millennium droughts in the past 15 years, followed by the wettest three-week period in its history. This summer, the state released an updated Extreme Heat Action Plan and expanded CalHeatScore, a tool that provides communities with real-time information about heat risk.

Newsom also met separately with German Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider and Spanish President Pedro Sánchez to discuss additional cooperation on clean energy, climate action, and zero-emission vehicles.

At Climate Week NYC, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom highlighted California's Farm to School program, which benefits nearly 3 million students. The state permanently funded the program to ensure schools continue serving students nutritious meals made with California-grown ingredients.
